Background Information: Infertility

Currently 1 in 7 couples are considered to have difficulty in conceiving. According to the Merck Manual, 40% of infertility lies with the man, 40% with the woman and 20% to a combination. It is therefore important that infertility is viewed a joint condition.

In western culture, the desire to have children at a later age is also having an effect on conception. The statistics show that peak fertility occurs at 21-25 for both men and women. For women by the age of 25 this reduces to a 75% chance of pregnancy within 6 months. By 30, this decreases to a 47% chance and by 40 this has reached a 25% chance of conception.

Chinese medicine has been successfully treating infertility for more than 2000 years.

Couples who seek treatment for infertility come with previously identified conditions that include:

     Sperm abnormalities
     Polycystic ovarian syndrome
     Blocked Fallopian tubes
     Uterine fibroids
     Hormone imbalances
     Endometriosis

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine treatment for infertility is based not just on these diagnosed medical terms, but on what we refer to as patterns of disharmony.

The first step is to look at the menstrual cycle and attempt to regulate it. This may involve changing the length or regularity of the cycle, the heaviness of the period, removing period pains or premenstrual symptoms.

Making these improvements can improve egg quality, mucus quality and the function and blood supply at the uterine endometrium. This will without doubt increase the likelihood of fertilisation and implantation.

At The Centre for Natural Fertility, we pay close attention to every detail of the cycle and by studying the subtle changes in symptoms and temperature we can provide a targeted treatment plan. Our aims with each treatment depend on where you are in your cycle and what the body needs to be doing at that time.

Acupuncture and herbal medicine do not have to be an alternative to western medicine. Used in conjunction with western medication or during assisted conception programmes such as IVF, the chances of conception can increase even further.

Testing and Screening

At appropriate stages during the treatment programmes various tests and health screenings are available at The Centre for Natural Fertility including ovulation tests and peri-menopause tests.

To further aid optimum health and fertility the Clinic also offers Advanced Health Screening using a technique, called Bioelectrical Impedance Measurement (BIM), which represents the latest in 21st century health screening technology combined with acupuncture principles. The BIM screening instrument is non-invasive, safe and quick. The software module effectively analyses, profiles and interprets impedance measurement data to present client profiles in a simple, effective and easy to use format. This technology can be used to screen for hormone imbalances, nutritional status and food sensitivity. Food sensitivity testing from blood samples is also available.
